Bemidji's Mountain Bike Team: A Niche Community in a Challenging Sport
In the world of high school sports, where football and basketball often take center stage, a dedicated group of students in Bemidji, Minnesota, has carved out a unique niche for themselves. The Bemidji Mountain Bike Team, a relatively new addition to the local sports scene, has become a tight-knit community of passionate riders who find joy in the challenging and often overlooked sport of mountain biking. This team, led by the dedicated Coach Mark Larson, has not only created a space for these students to excel in a non-traditional sport but has also fostered a sense of camaraderie and adventure that sets it apart from other high school teams.
One of the most striking aspects of this team is the strong sense of community it has cultivated. Liam Larson, a senior on the team, reflects on the team's dynamics, saying, "It's a little like a small community. We've been riding with each other since we were super young." This close-knit nature is evident in the way the team supports and encourages one another, both on and off the bike. During race weekends, the team camps out together, pre-riding the course and sharing a sense of camaraderie that extends beyond the sport itself.
The team's passion for mountain biking is infectious, and it's clear that the sport offers more than just physical challenges. As Ben Lindgren, another senior, notes, "A lot of people here (in Bemidji) ski, too. Nordic skiing and mountain biking kind of go hand in hand." This connection between different outdoor activities highlights the appeal of mountain biking as a gateway to a broader range of outdoor pursuits, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and adventure.
However, the team's journey hasn't been without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles is the expense of the sport. Competition-level mountain bikes can cost over $1,000, which can be a barrier for some families. To address this, the team has organized fundraisers, such as the Lumberjack Singletrack Fundraiser Ride/Race, to help cover the costs of travel and equipment. Coach Larson explains, "Because of this fundraiser race and some other fundraising we've done, we were able to buy a couple of team bikes that we loan out to kids that are new to the team. Then we navigate their first bike purchase after they know that they want to come to it."
Another challenge is the multi-sport problem. Mountain biking falls in the middle of a packed fall sports season, with football, soccer, and cross-country among the options for boys and soccer, cross-country, tennis, volleyball, and swim and dive for girls. To accommodate this, the team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evenings, allowing students to participate without conflicting with their other commitments. Coach Larson adds, "We do have a couple of kids on the team that play football or hockey and do this. We just worked with those families as needed if they want to do a more traditional sport that has after-school practice every day."
Despite these challenges, the Bemidji Mountain Bike Team has thrived, thanks to the dedication of Coach Larson and the passion of the students. The team's success lies in its ability to create a supportive and inclusive environment, where riders of all skill levels can come together and enjoy the sport. As Liam Larson reflects, "I've known these guys for most of my life. So it's more of a riding with your friends type of thing."
