The Rising Star Shines Bright: Helenius' NHL Debut and Beyond
In a thrilling NHL encounter, Konsta Helenius, the 19-year-old sensation, made his mark with a goal and two assists, earning his first three NHL points. But here's where it gets controversial... the Buffalo Sabres, despite a strong start, had to hold off a determined Nashville Predators team for a 5-3 victory.
Helenius, drafted 14th overall by the Sabres in 2024, lived his dream on Monday, scoring his first NHL goal and creating history. "It's a dream come true," he exclaimed. "Scoring in the NHL is every player's aspiration, and now I've achieved it. It's an incredible feeling."
Noah Ostlund, another standout, scored twice, while Peyton Krebs contributed a goal and an assist. Alex Lyon, returning from injury, made 31 saves, a crucial factor in the Sabres' success.
"It was a great feeling to be back," Lyon said. "The start was intense, and credit to Helenius, Ostlund, and Benson for their line's energy. They were on fire from the get-go. We had to dig deep and hold on to the lead."
The Predators, led by Ryan O'Reilly and Filip Forsberg, each with three points, fought back valiantly. But the Sabres' early dominance proved crucial.
"We lacked movement, work ethic, and competitiveness in the first period," Forsberg admitted. "Buffalo was faster, stronger, and won every puck battle. We had a choice: quit or fight back. I'm proud of how we responded, but going down 4-0 is a tough lesson."
Ostlund's rebound goal at 8:11 of the first period, assisted by Helenius, gave the Sabres the lead. Ostlund's second goal, again on a rebound, made it 2-0. Helenius' first NHL goal, a wrister on the rush, extended the lead to 3-0.
Tage Thompson's goal at 4:20 of the second period put the Sabres up 4-0, but the Predators fought back with goals from O'Reilly and Forsberg to make it 4-2. O'Reilly's second goal in the third period brought the Predators within one, but Krebs' empty-netter sealed the deal for Buffalo.
"We saw glimpses of the team we can be," Predators coach Andrew Brunette said. "Buffalo is exceptional, and they've dominated the League lately. We didn't bring our A-game, especially at home."
Helenius joins an elite group of Finnish teenagers with a three-point game, including Patrik Laine and Sebastian Aho. The Sabres' record in back-to-back games is impressive, and the return of Predators forward Ozzy Wiesblatt after an injury is a boost.
