These intriguing figures were part of 'One Man Army,' a traveling sculptural installation by Northern Irish artist Colin Spofforth. The project's mission? To explore Britain's forgotten industrial and social history. Each location features up to fifteen life-size figures.
The sculptures are designed to look like solemn, penitent forms rising from the earth, placed in locations that were once bustling with work and community, such as old power stations, dockyards, quarries, and abandoned farms.
The artist's goal is to use sculpture to reconnect communities with landscapes shaped by industry, reflecting on the relationship between people, place, and history. The project is documented and shared on social media, turning the sculptures, their locations, and the public's reactions into short films. These films explore how art can bring people closer to their surroundings and each other.
In Brymbo, the installation was placed opposite the historic steelworks site, a location deeply tied to the village's industrial past. This was just one of several sites across the UK chosen for their historical significance.
