A crucial initiative is set to launch on February 1st, 2026, aiming to provide much-needed support to protection workers in Singapore. The National Council of Social Service (NCSS) is establishing a S$15 million care fund to address the emotional and psychological challenges faced by these dedicated professionals.
But here's where it gets controversial: the fund will not only offer psychological support and mentoring but also enable agencies to grant up to two weeks of wellness leave to their practitioners. This move is a direct response to the heavy emotional burden that protection work entails, as these professionals often confront trauma and urgent, high-risk cases daily.
The care fund is designed to create more supportive work environments for social service professionals, including social workers, case workers, and care staff, who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and families affected by domestic violence.
And this is the part most people miss: the fund's establishment is a direct result of recommendations made by a review panel following the tragic case of Megan Khung, a four-year-old who lost her life to abuse in February 2020. The panel identified multiple lapses and shortcomings in the social service agencies involved, highlighting the need for structural support for these practitioners.
The NCSS and the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) have thanked various SSAs, such as Montfort Care and TRANS Family Services, for their input in shaping the care fund. Their ideas, which include psychological support, retreat programs, and structured mentorship, are expected to benefit over 1,000 protection practitioners.
