This strong condemnation followed remarks made by Hess, a freestyle skier, who expressed that he doesn't feel he represents "everything that’s going on in the U.S." at the moment.
But here's where it gets interesting: the context behind Hess's comments. During a press conference on Friday, U.S. athletes were fielding questions about their feelings on representing the nation amidst the Trump administration's intensified immigration enforcement policies. Hunter Hess, a 27-year-old who hails from Bend, Oregon, but currently resides in Salt Lake City, admitted to having "mixed emotions." He candidly stated, "It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t." Hess clarified that his decision to compete in the Milan Cortina Games was driven by his desire to represent his friends, family, and "all the things I believe are good about the U.S."
President Trump, however, evidently wasn't moved by Hess's nuanced perspective. His response was swift and sharp.
